Saint John Berchmans

The 26th of November is the feast day of Saint John Berchmans. He is the patron saint of altar Servers, Jesuit scholastics, and students.

Saint John Berchmans lived between 1599 till 1621 and was born in Flanders in Belgium. He was the eldest of five children to a shoemaker. Before the age of seven, he would rise early in the morning to serve at two or three masses a day. He made a custom of making the Stations of the Cross on Fridays while barefoot. His mother suffered from an illness when he was 9 years old and he tended to her until she died. He enrolled in a Jesuit college as well as the Society of the Blessed Virgin and prayed her Office daily. He believed that "If I do not become a saint when I am young, I shall never become one" and he began his priestly formation with the Jesuits. At the age of 22 he died while he studied for his seminary in Rome. After his death, many miracles were attributed to him.

Little children, how much you have answered to my call, God knows. I am calling you - it is not late - decide for holiness and a life with God, in grace and in peace. God will bless you and give to you a hundred-fold, if you trust in Him. Thank you for having responded to my call.
